The Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s.

Cirillo was a university student struggling to stay focused on his studies. He grabbed a tomato-shaped kitchen timer — pomodoro is Italian for tomato — set it to 25 minutes, and challenged himself to work without interruption until the timer rang. That single tomato timer became the seed of a technique used by millions worldwide.

The method is simple: work for one focused interval (a pomodoro, traditionally 25 minutes), then take a short break. After four pomodori, take a longer break. The ticking timer externalizes your intention to focus; the ringing bell announces permission to rest.

“The physical act of winding the timer confirms the user's determination to start the task; ticking externalizes the desire to complete the task; ringing announces a break.”— Francesco Cirillo, The Pomodoro Technique

PomoPeople is a love letter to the original technique, reimagined for people whose nervous systems need more than a ticking clock and a leaderboard. We kept Cirillo's core insight — time as a gentle container, not a prison — and wrapped it in pixel pals, mood rooms, and the quiet company of real humans working alongside you.

Our story

Why we built PomoPeople

Hi there. I'm Jaya, the founder of PomoPeople.

In the winter of 2021, I hit a breaking point in my quality of life. I'd spent years — since high school — putting off every assignment and major life task until 3am or the very last possible second. The work always turned out “good enough,” so I didn't feel the squeeze of bad grades or performance reviews for a long time. But my mental health was taking a steep nosedive each year.

That same year, I learned I have cPTSD. Very quickly, I realized my chronic procrastination wasn't a personal failing; it was a symptom of a much larger system of trauma from my upbringing. I decided to treat myself with more kindness that year. I was determined to have a better quality of life: to actually log off from work at 5pm instead of getting critical tasks done at the witching hour, and to spend more time enjoying my life because I deserved to stop putting everything off. I deserved better.

Using the Pomodoro Technique, alongside other major life changes, led to a promotion, a raise, and, eventually, a quality of life I could be proud of. I even used this method to get life-saving tasks done when I fled domestic violence in 2025! I fully believe that the discipline I began cultivating back in 2021 gave me the path to the sovereignty I experience today.

Discipline can be fun, sexy, joyful, and fully our own. It can be what we make it, not what someone else tells us discipline should be. I designed this product as a reflection of the joy we can cultivate when we keep our promises to ourselves. Those mood rooms are rich inner worlds, entirely yours — while other people might only see your outputs, I know that the act of getting a task done is a practice in itself. And it is worth celebrating.

Wherever you are in life, I wish you a kinder, more fruitful relationship with the tasks in front of you. And, soon, may the work of your day flow through your hands with ease.
